A Missing Peace by Beth Fred

A turbulent, emotionally charged YA novel that breaks down barriers and challenges the status quo...

Angry, seventeen-year-old Iraqi war refugee Mirriam Yohanna hates her new life in Killeen, Texas, where the main attraction is a military base, populated with spoiled army brats like Caleb Miller.

Caleb has much to be angry about too, including Mirriam who turns him down flat in front of everyone. Eager for retribution, Caleb agrees to a dare that will see him take Mirriam to the prom and regain his pride.

But their relationship soon moves beyond high school antics. Mirriam and Caleb are bound together by more than location, and as they are forced to work closely together on a school assignment, they start to uncover an explosive story that has the potential to ruin lives — and both of their futures. One single truth changes everything and strengthens their bond.

When Mirriam's family discovers their relationship, they decide it's time to arrange her marriage to a proper Iraqi man. Caleb must convince Mirriam that he is in it for forever — or risk losing her for good.

With the AC all the way up, I still baked in the stifling heat. The other guys probably were too,  but they didn't complain.

3 stars out of 5
I loved the premise of the story. The only thing was that Caleb started to get on my nerves. And then there was some major insta-love happening here. SPOILER: They only knew each other for a couple of months before they decided to elope.
(You know it's getting real when I start using GIFs to express my emotions....)

That right there pretty much made the book a three star rather than a four star. The other thing was that Caleb seemed to change into a completely different person after his accident. He didn't even really resemble the person he was before.

I did like both Mirriam's and Caleb's backstories. I thought they were unbelievably sweet. I wish Beth would have elaborated more on Mirriam's life in Iraq and a little about where they had been before they moved to Killeen.

I loved Mirriam's personality. She's got some spunk. Her brother on the other hand was strange. I didn't understand why he was so adamant that she date an Iraqi guys while it was okay for him to date an American girl.

We had sass and smackdown and yearning and just plain fabulousness. Plus I discovered some great new songs out of it.

The Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb

A thrilling spy mission, a moving Holocaust story, and a first-class work of narrative nonfiction.

In 1945, at the end of World War II, Adolf Eichmann, the head of operations for the Nazis' Final Solution, walked into the mountains of Germany and vanished from view. Sixteen years later, an elite team of spies captured him at a bus stop in Argentina and smuggled him to Israel, resulting in one of the century's most important trials -- one that cemented the Holocaust in the public imagination.

THE NAZI HUNTERS is the thrilling and fascinating story of what happened between these two events. Survivor Simon Wiesenthal opened Eichmann's case; a blind Argentinean and his teenage daughter provided crucial information. Finally, the Israeli spies -- many of whom lost family in the Holocaust -- embarked on their daring mission, recounted here in full. Based on the adult bestseller HUNTING EICHMANN, which is now in development as a major film, and illustrated with powerful photos throughout, THE NAZI HUNTERS is a can't-miss work of narrative nonfiction for middle-grade and YA readers.

First line:
A remote stretch of unlit road on a windy night. Two cars appear out of the darkness.
5 stars out of 5
When I was younger, I read all the time. In third and fourth grade, I couldn't be seen without a book about the Holocaust. I was obsessed. But when your that old, the tragedies that these people went through don't really hit you. While other kids were playing cops and robbers (rather than cowboys and Indians), I was pondering what it would be like to live as a Jew in Nazi Germany. I loved pondering how I would respond to certain things. Would I cower before death? Or would I stand up for my faith?

It's been awhile since I've read a Holocaust book, but this was definitely the perfect book to pick up. Bascomb gives an amazingly detailed account of the hunt for Adolf Eichmann, but it also flows like a story and not a boring history book. The only problem I had was that I had a problem keeping names and involvement in the hunt straight, but Bascomb had no control over the characters.

There are some moments that made me tear up. Reading Zeev's account of what he went through in Hungary and Auschwitz was heartbreaking. And the ending paragraphs where a bittersweet happy moment. "Mama, Fruma was avenged. It was her own brother who captured Adolf Eichmann." Those words broke my heart and made me smile at the same time. Bascomb's inclusion of Israeli Attorney General Gideon Hausner's opening and closing speeches of the trial was ingenious. "When I stand before you here, Judges of Israel, to lead the Prosecution of Adolf Eichmann, I am not standing alone. With me are six million accusers...but their voice is not heard. Therefore, I will be their spokesman." These opening words from Hausner draw your attention to the atrocities committed against those whose died. And now they do not get to accuse their condemners.

I think all Middle/High Schoolers should read this book and others like it, so that we may never forget the atrocities that faced the Jews during the Holocaust. For those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it.

Trisha Wolfe has created a masterpiece in The Darkest Part.It was very sad in a sweet way (and we all know how much I love books like that). Everyone had secrets, and Trisha did an amazing job of drawing out the reveal while also keeping me interested to find out what that secret was. I was rooting for Holden the whole time.

Trisha did an amazing job of capturing Sam's descent into madness. It was very realistic. And she captured Holden's quilt perfectly. Tyler's character was written well. He went from this perfect guy in Sam's eyes to this person that she didn't even know, and it broke her heart that he didn't trust her with these things while he was alive. I kinda want a story from Tyler's POV now to know exactly what he was thinking.

I can't wait to see what Trisha has in store for us next with this series!!!

Reena’s gotten used to being without Sawyer, and she’s finally getting the hang of this strange, unexpected life. But just as swiftly and suddenly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

In this breathtaking debut, Katie Cotugno weaves together the story of one couple falling in love—twice.

New Adult Contemporary Romance

Hereafter (Shadowlands #2) by Kate Brian
Rory Miller thought her life was over when a serial killer set his sights on her and forced her into witness protection. But a fresh start on Juniper Landing Island was exactly what she and her family needed. For the first time in years she and her sister hang out at the beach, gossip about boys, and party together. But Rory's world is about to change again. Picturesque Juniper Landing isn't what it seems. The truth about the swirling fog that rolls in each morning, the bridge that leads to nowhere, and those beautiful locals who seem to watch Rory's every move is more terrifying than being hunted by Steven Nell. From the best-selling author of the Private and Privilege series comes the second novel in a heart-stopping trilogy about a girl who must pick up the pieces after the only life she's ever known ends.

Prearranged bindings are common for magical families like her own, however when she travels to the whimsical Emerald Isle she discovers there’s more to her betrothal and McKale’s clan than she could have imagined.

But one giant obstacle stands the way of their budding romance: a seductive and deadly Fae princess accustomed to getting what she wants—and what she wants is McKale as her plaything. Love, desire, and jealousies collide as Robyn’s family and McKale’s clan must work together to outsmart the powerful Faeries and preserve the only hope left for their people.

A Perfect Mess had an excellent plot line with some hidden meanings that actually made me think. The story begins with Aubree's recurring chicken dream. It is never stated what the interpretation of the dream was, but I was thinking about it the whole book and I just loved being able to do that and put my own meaning in the dream. The plot was also suspenseful, leaving e wondering what had happened on Wild Magnolia Road.

What I did not like about the novel was the characters. I felt like Aubree and Booker were always crying. I could kinda deal with that if it was just Aubree, but I felt like Booker was crying more than Aubree was. He would tear up at stupid things. I was just disappointed when I was reading his POV.

The setting is fairly vivid and Dawson's use of colloquials in her writing was good. I could almost hear them talking based on the way the words were written!

I am looking forward to reading about the rest of the unholy trinity (as Booker and his two brothers [their triplets] are called) and the imperfect trinity (as I have taken to thinking about Aubree and her two best friends) in the two upcoming sequels!
