House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City #3) by Sarah J Maas

The stunning third book in the sexy, action-packed Crescent City series, following the global bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath.

Bryce Quinlan never expected to see a world other than Midgard, but now that she has, all she wants is to get back. Everything she loves is in Midgard: her family, her friends, her mate. Stranded in a strange new world, she's going to need all her wits about her to get home again. And that's no easy feat when she has no idea who to trust.

Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he's in the Asteri's dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce's fate. He's desperate to help her, but until he can escape the Asteri's leash, his hands are quite literally tied.

In this sexy, breathtaking sequel to the #1 bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath, Sarah J. Maas's Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce and Hunt's world is brought to the brink of collapse-with its future resting on their shoulders.

I was so excited for this book. And then it took me 3 weeks to finish it once I started it. This is definitely my least favorite SJM novel. The pacing was bad, the chapter divisions were bad, the character development was non existent.

First off, I hate Ithan and Tharion. I know this is not a new opinion, but I give zero fucks about their POVs. I would much rather have Declan and Flynn chapters than Ithan and Tharion chapters.

SJM tries to pull another Aelin in this novel with Bryce hiding all her schemes and telling her friends about them at the last minute, but she does not pull it off well in this series. Aelin's motivations have always felt selfless but Bryce's motivation seem wholly selfish.

Real quick on chapter divisions, SJM's editor definitely should have arranged chapters differently with POVs grouped together with people who are in similar locations. So at the beginning the chapters should have been grouped Hunt/Ruhn/Lidia, Bryce, and Tharion/Ithan. Jumping between these very different locations in two different worlds was confusing. Maybe this is a petty thing to be mad about, but this is one of the best selling authors in the world and is with a big name publishing company, so I definitely think they can do better.

WTF was that end scene? Sentient robots, floating through space, ex girlfriend come back to life??? I can't.

I am so on the fence on if there is a sequel. I feel there is enough unanswered questions that there could be, plus the fact that there is still one more House to name a book after. But also, just let it lie. Where do we go from here with the Asteri defeated? Maybe we'll just get a nice little novella.

I also was expecting so much more from the crossover and it turned out to be disappointing. And the hologram monologue was a little much. I'm sad we didn't get more Feyre and Rhys. Though I did appreciate the glimpse of relationship that Ember and Randall seemed to form with Nesta, though, again, I would have liked to see it fleshed out more.

Bryce lost her status as my favorite character in CC and Lidia gladly took over that crown. I was just left wanting more and more scenes with her. Her relationships with Ruhn and with her sons were written well and felt real.

The only reason I didn't DNF this book was because SJM wrote it. I'm glad I finished it, but it was a struggle.

Bryce & Danika scene: I just think Danika is a terrible friend and this scene just made me mad because of that

Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel scene: It was okay. I don't feel like it added anything to have read it.

Bryce and Hunt scene: I loved this scene. It had me laughing at their antics. I loved seeing a more "normal" scene showcasing their day to day life.

Ember and Randall scene: This scene gave me something I didn't know I needed from this story. Except the line "Why are all of you so attractive?" That took me out of the moment.

Ruhn and Lidia scene: I love these two. Utter perfection
