The Final Empire (Mistborn #1) by Brandon Sanderson

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, the first book in the wildly successful Mistborn trilogy, now in trade paperback.
For a thousand years, ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years, the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years, the Lord Ruler reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when all hope was lost, the scarred, heartbroken half-Skaa Kelsier found in himself the powers of a Mistborn.
A brilliant thief and natural leader, Kelsier recruits the underworld's smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, who each share one of his many powers and relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream: not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.

But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers that she’s never dreamed of.

I loved this world that Sanderson has created. Not only did he create a desolate world with a unique magic system and lovable if not frustrating characters, but he also covers very important topics that leave one thinking about many social justice issues such as slavery and oppression, the ruling class and their passivity, and climate change. Sanderson also had me sobbing towards the end and I wasn't expecting that.

I deducted half a point for 2 reasons. First, I spent the first quarter of the book trying to understand what the fuck is going on. There were a lot of new terms, plus a completely new magic system to learn (not the usual elemental stuff you find in fantasy). The other was the romance in the book. I don't mind that it is very much a sub plot. I just didn't find it well written. It was awkward and felt clunky to read.

The story arc progressed much faster that I was expecting. It will be interesting to see how Sanderson continues to carry this story forward through the next two books.

Know Before you go: Gabic's guide to the beginning of Mistborn
First off, "skaa" is the name for the enslaved group of people in The Final Empire. Second, "Allomancers" are the magic weilders of the world. Magic works by ingesting specific metals and then burning them off while they're in your digestive system. The magic is instantly accessible once the metal is ingested. Different metals allow for different abilities. Mistlings are allomancers that only can burn one metal. Mistborn are allomancers who can burn all the allomantic metals. Finally, the italicized passages at the beginning of the chapter is a snippet from a journal from the past.

Knowing this little bit of information will hopefully help with the confusion for the first quarter of the book.
