All that's standing between me and freedom are eleven bloodthirsty fae. As a convicted assassin, I've been banished from the fae realm for years but now I have the opportunity to compete in a ruthless competition to earn a full pardon. Dragons and twisted mazes are the least of my worries now. I can handle a few bullies and death-defying challenges. The thing that will keep me up at night is having to face those I betrayed. Especially Reveln, the prince whose brother I killed. Every time I see the hatred in his eyes it reopens old wounds, a reminder of the destiny that was stolen from me. And I only have myself to blame. But I'll find a new destiny-by winning the Trial of Thorns. The whole realm thinks I'm weak but I'm stronger than they could ever imagine. By the time this is through-I'll bring them all to their knees.

I loved this book full of deadly trials with a shadow momma. I enjoyed the tension between Caelynn and Reveln. I do wish there was a little more political intrigue considering the set up for the trials. Caelynn knows she is the villain to the story and uses that to her advantage. She is not looking for a redemption arc, just wants to be able to help her home that she hasn't seen in 10 years. Reveln wants to prove that is strong and capable and worthy of a prominent position in the court.
I would have rated this book higher, but something at the end threw me off. (spoilers ahead) Raven, a 17 year old human, confesses her romantic love for Caelynn, a 26 year old fae. This would have been fine, if Caelynn didn't then question possibly having a romantic relationship with Raven. I'm also confused how Caelynn ended up in foster care in the first place since she is now 26. I don't know if that because she looks like a teenager still or what. Anyways, this whole subplot just gave me the ick.
I do think that this is a fun read and I think a lot of people will enjoy it. I am unsure as of yet if I will be picking up the sequel though
