Onyx Storm (Empyrean #3) by Rebecca Yarros

Get ready to fly or die in the breathtaking follow-up to Fourth Wing and Iron Flame from #1 New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.

After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons.
No more time for uncertainty.
Because the battle has truly begun; and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre.
The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves - her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army.
They need power.
They need magic.
And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.
But a storm is coming... and not everyone can survive its wrath

I am unwell after finishing this book. That ending, Miss Yarros, I think might kill me more than Iron Flame. I finished the book, immediately re read the last chapter and a half, sat and stared at the wall, and then proceeded to tell my husband (who has not read the books) all about what happened while crying. God bless that man, because he has been listening to me talk about this book all day and has been helping me fill out my bingo card while asking me questions I hadn't thought about.

I loved how much more we got to see of some of our side characters this book! We really got to see Ridoc come into his own, get a lot more of Garrick, and we got to see Imogen and Quinn just doing third year things, frustrated with the ridiculousness that is our Iron Squad second years. I also came to like Dain and Cath a lot more now that they're not fucking with our girl.

Holy fucking signets, did we learn so many signets. This whole book just felt like an entire knowledge drop. Because of this, I felt it was a slower moving novel and that I sometimes struggled to grasp all the downloads because soooo much information was being thrown at me. There was also I lottttttt of having to read between the lines. I have so many questions and so many theories, but that's for another time.

I do think that the stakes are higher than ever after this novel and the next two books will be more fast paced. This was not a fast paced novel like I was hoping for, but this is the middle book in a 5 book series and we had a lot of things to learn. Personally, I feel like Heir of Fire in the Throne of Glass series was similarly paced and that's one of my favorite books in the series. I think my appreciation of the book will grow once we have the final two books.
