“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

First off, I just have to defend my girl Violet with the whole communication thing. Did it get frustrating throughout the book? Yes. But I was more frustrated with Xaden than anything. Yes, there are going to be things that Xaden cannot tell Violet because of his role in the Revolution. However, he makes choices not to be open with her. He could have been open about Kat when they first met her. He could have told her about the runes he was having her practice and that were on her knives. But he deliberately chooses not to talk about those things. Should Violet ask more questions? Yes. But Xaden is equally as complicit in this non-communication thing. Something, that Violet brings up towards the end of the book.
Moving on, this book is fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole book. I was always wondering what was going to happen next. The re-read is especially delightful to pick up on all the foreshadowing that I didn't see on my first read. I'm so excited for Onyx Storm to see how the story progresses. Yarros has weaved a masterful story that is enjoyable no matter how many times you read it.
If you love dragons, academia in fantasy, banter (particularly between dragons), and sexual tension, this is definitely the series for you. There is a reason this series is so popular and this sequel has definitely stood up to the hype developed by Fourth Wing.
