The Hurricane Wars (The Hurricane Wars #1) By Thea Guanzon

The heart is a battlefield.

All Talasyn has ever known is the Hurricane Wars. Growing up an orphan in a nation under siege by the ruthless Night Emperor, Talasyn has found her family among the soldiers who fight for freedom. But she is hiding a deadly secret: light magic courses through her veins, a blazing power believed to have been wiped out years ago that can cut through the Night Empire's shadows.

Prince Alaric, the emperor's only son and heir, has been forged into a weapon by his father. Tasked with obliterating any threats to the Night Empire's rule with the strength of his armies and mighty Shadow magic, Alaric has never been bested. That is until he sees Talasyn burning brightly on the battlefield with the magic that killed his grandfather, turned his father into a monster, and ignited the Hurricane Wars. In a clash of light and dark, their powers merge and create a force the likes of which has never been seen.

Talasyn and Alaric both know this war can only end with them. But a greater threat is coming, and the strange new magic they can create together could be the only way to overcome it. Thrust into an uneasy alliance, they will confront the secrets at the heart of the war and find, in each other, a searing passion--one that could save their world...or destroy it.

An exquisite fantasy brimming with unforgettable characters, sizzling enemies-to-lovers romance, and richly drawn worlds, The Hurricane Wars marks the breathtaking debut of an extraordinary new writer.

He heard the girl before he saw her, a high and golden hum that cut through the chaos of battle like the first flare of sunshine.

Okay the start is pretty rough. In the first chapter, we are introduced to approximately: 9 places, 11 people, 13 terms, and 2 dimensions (other than the one the story is in). I had to re read the first few chapters to figure out how this magic system worked. Also, I still don't know what the heck a sennight is after it being used fairly frequently as a method of time.
**Update from halfway through book 2**Apparently some of them are just fancy words that I didn't bother to Google. Halfway through the book, I finally found out that a sennight is a week. Oops

This book starts as a war time fantasy novel but fairly quickly becomes more political intrigue than fights on the battlefield. Though sometimes the politics in fantasy books, I was always wanting to read more to see what would happen next. Though, sometimes I would get annoyed because it felt like Guanzon would have weird time jumps where important things happened and the reader could really have benefitted from scenes during the time jump. Though, to be fair the book is already a decent length. I just feel like there were big scenes that we missed out on.

Talasyn and Alaric are both touch-starved, abused adults who also tend to be socially awkward. They quickly meet on the battlefield as mortal enemies, each trying to kill the other with their opposite magics.

This book is a slept on fantasy that I want to see talked about more on BookTok/Instagram because it has all the elements that are well loved (if you can get through the first few chapters). It has enemies to lovers, forced proximity, marriage of convenience, master/apprentice, dragons, elemental magic. And the magic system is fairly unique, where it is drawn from other dimensions. I still haven't quite grasped how it works but it is interesting none-the-less.

Run, don't walk, to pick of this fun fantasy debut!
